13 and 14 November. The Southern Peninsula Basketball Association will host its Annual Junior Basketball Tournament across the Mornington Peninsula in 2021. The Southern Peninsula Tournament will be host to over 500 teams, catering for all skill levels from the prestigious Championship division through to regional level teams.
The Australian Under-20 Championships was first established in 1974 (men’s) and 1981 (women’s), and see teams representing state and territories for the title of Under 20s Australian champions. The Ivor Burge Championships is for open-age players with an intellectual disability and dates back to 1995 when the inaugural tournament was held.
Managed by Basketball Australia, the Australian School Championships are open to all Australian secondary schools with team registrations for this year’s event to open in July. The recent outbreak of COVID 19 in multiple States and recent border closures across the country has significantly impacted national basketball tournaments. The 2021 Australian Under-16 Championships, set to be held at Warwick Stadium (WA) commencing Sunday 4 July, will not proceed as it has been determined that the minimum number of teams required to compete cannot be met.
AAU Australia will now provide an important developmental pathway for aspiring athletes in basketball and many other sports. According to Basketball Australia, there are over 400,000 registered youth basketball players, yet less than 200 players that we know of currently play college ball at the Div. 1, 2, 3 or NAIA level.
